Hong Kong Demonstrators Attend Anti-Government Protest

The Future of Hong Kong: national security, decoupling and the international financial hub

Juni 11, 2020 09:30 - 10:30

The decision to draft a National Security Law for Hong Kong by the NPC led to strong condemnation from the US and the EU, while China argues it will protect the interests of investors.

In this web seminar, MERICS Visiting Academic Fellow Michiel Haasbroek discussed the political background, the implications for Hong Kong as an international financial center and considerations for international business. Will we see renewed protests flare up? Can Hong Kong's unique position as a gateway to mainland China be maintained? What challenges and opportunities will this bring for businesses?

Michiel Haasbroek has worked in financial services in China between 2012 and 2020, lastly as Chief Risk Officer Greater China for the Dutch bank ABN AMRO. He currently pursues his research interest in China’s financial system, a topic with which he has been involved since 2003. Michiel Haasbroek holds an MA in Politics and History from University Trier, an MSc in Finance from TiasNimbas Business School and a PhD in East Asia science from Ruhr-University Bochum.
